This report looks at whether the laws and policies in the Philippines make it possible for children to access their environmental rights.
We found that in the Philippines, children have been able to bring environmental cases to the courts and have used the country’s strong laws to enforce action to protect the environment. High-profile cases brought to court by children within the Philippines have been highly influential globally. They have pushed the world to recognise children’s role in bringing environmental cases to protect the rights of future generations as early as 1993. In terms of action to tackle the climate crisis, the Philippines has developed specific ways to respond to violations of constitutional environmental rights. For example “the Writ of Kalikasan” grants courts a wide range of powers to prevent, end and order restoration in response to environmental damage.
