This report looks at whether the laws and policies in Switzerland make it possible for children to access their environmental rights.
In Switzerland, an agreement between the country’s cantons (or member states) ensures that environmental education is included in children’s school curricula. The country sets out to instil a sense of responsibility towards the environment in all children. In addition, the Swiss government has promoted the concept of intergenerational equity in its Strategy for sustainable development, indicating that the country recognises that the rights and opportunities of future generations must be equal to the rights of those living today. Whilst the Swiss Constitution does not contain specific environmental rights, it mentions sustainable development and the protection of the population and its natural environment against damage.
