About CRIN

This is who we are and what we’re fighting for

CRIN is a creative human rights organisation focused on children’s rights. We press for rights - not charity - and campaign for a genuine shift in how governments and societies view and treat children. Our goal is a world where the human rights of children and young people are recognised, respected and enforced, and where every rights violation has a remedy.

We work on many issues, from the survival of the planet, to sexual violence, to civil and political rights, to the right to bodily integrity, privacy, expression and information, to how children’s rights are affected by new technology.

We advocate for international institutions like the UN, as well as governments and professionals, to adopt strong children’s rights policies. We undertake legal research and analysis and propose better policies where these are lacking. Through critical thinking, artwork and our vision for the future, we encourage people to think differently about the world we live in.

About the role

This is why we need you

Guided by our CRIN Code, we are committed to building a team that represents a wide range of experiences, locations, backgrounds, heritage and perspectives. We understand that the world and its problems cannot be looked at in isolation and that everything is connected.

Achieving change for children’s rights - and addressing the root causes that allow violations to occur in the first place - requires a variety of approaches and voices. How CRIN works on each issue varies depending on the need and our ability to bring about change. However, a bedrock of our work is using the law to uphold stronger standards for children’s rights.

The international human rights framework, including the UN system, has been under strain - and while we think it’s important to simultaneously focus on other channels for change, we also want to continue to be a critical friend at the global level.

This is who we’re looking for

CRIN is looking for a Climate Engagement Adviser to coordinate two key areas:

  1. CRIN’s Climate Advisers: Ensure CRIN’s group of ten under-18 climate activists are supported to safely and meaningfully engage with our work on environmental issues and with global climate advocacy spaces.

  2. International climate change frameworks: Advise CRIN on its advocacy strategy for COP and Bonn, with a focus this year on Just Transition and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and doing so in close collaboration with members of the Children’s Rights Climate Coalition.

This work would be done in close collaboration with CRIN’s Policy and Advocacy Coordinator (Geneva-based) and one of its Co-Directors (London-based). There would also be collaboration with other members of the team who work on environmental issues, including on our children’s access to environmental justice project, on our work on children’s rights and hazardous chemicals, and on children’s rights and deliberative democracy (i.e. children’s climate assemblies).

Key tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Provide expertise and advice to the CRIN team on key international climate and environmental frameworks, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - ensuring that CRIN's work aligns with the latest global developments and commitments.

  • Further develop our advocacy strategy on Just Transition and NDCs and work together with colleagues to pursue its implementation before and during Bonn and COP.

  • Be part of CRIN’s delegation at international conferences like the climate COP and Bonn, as needed.

  • Coordinate CRIN’s group of Climate Advisers, all aged 18 or under. This includes scheduling and organising regular meetings, ensuring effective communication, and supporting their activism while prioritising their safety and well-being.

  • Advise CRIN on how to effectively integrate a children’s rights perspective into climate-related frameworks and advocacy efforts, ensuring the voices of children and young people are heard in global climate discussions.

  • Provide guidance and support to CRIN’s Climate Advisers when they are invited to speak or write publicly on climate issues in their capacity as CRIN’s Advisers.

  • Actively assess and identify opportunities for CRIN’s Climate Advisers to contribute to global, regional, and national climate decision-making processes, including COP negotiations and other international forums.

  • Ensure that CRIN’s Climate Advisers have the opportunity to input into CRIN’s climate and environmental related work.

  • Act as a CRIN representative with the Children’s Rights Climate Coalition and at the Human Rights and Climate Change Working Group, fostering relationships and collaborating with other organisations in the space.

  • Participate in CRIN team meetings and contribute to organisational matters, as requested and relevant.

We are looking for someone with the following attributes:

  • Strong understanding of the international climate spaces, including the UNFCCC. An asset would be someone who also understands the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) and the UN Biodiversity Conference;

  • Experience in climate advocacy and/or other international environmental frameworks as a young person;

  • An understanding of climate justice principles and the intersectionality of climate change with social, economic, and environmental inequalities;

  • An understanding of children's rights and how they intersect with climate action;

  • An understanding of child safeguarding principles and how to support children’s safe and meaningful participation in climate spaces;

  • Ability to communicate clearly with a range of audiences, including in writing, and to cultivate relationships with a variety of people, including children, policy makers and civil society advocates;

  • Motivated, with strong organisational skills and an ability to manage own work (including while remote-working);

  • Fluency in English;

  • Ability to thrive in a small (and mostly remote) team;

  • A connection with CRIN’s Code.

What it is like working with us

We are a small team of around 16 people. We take pride in our CRIN Code and try to approach our work and relationships with open minds, humility and respect. This helps us foster greater creativity, breadth of experience, and personal growth among our staff, and it’s essential to our success as an organisation.

Our staff and consultants work remotely and are located mainly in Europe at the moment. While we have lines of accountability, we also aim to have a relatively flat structure whereby everyone receives support from and is accountable to each other in a number of ways.

To help maintain a healthy work and home balance, CRIN has a 32-hour full-time working week (which can be spread over 4 or 5 days). We are committed to continuing to build a team that reflects the world’s diversity of skills, experiences, cultures and perspectives.
